Is there anything as nice as a dog when you come home? It doesn’t matter if you’ve only been gone 5 minutes, you’ve completed their lives by the act of walking in the door. And there is nothing better than a fat cat on your lap, a good book, and a hot cuppa tea on a rainy day. Heaven. I will never be without some animals in my house, they make it a home. To sloppily quote James Thurber: "My goal is to be the sort of person my dog thinks I am." Or something like that… Nicole, whose pudgy little affectionate doggy is a bit of heaven on earth – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Is there anything as nice as a dog when you come home? > Pets may not "cure" depression, but they force you to focus on > someone/something other than yourself.

Pets (Cats, Dogs, Rabbits and others) have been used in nursing homes to help seniors deal with depression and isolation.  Many seniors perk up and smile just by petting a nice quiet fuzzy animal.   > That is always a good thing.  They > also have alot to teach us if are willing to see it through their eyes > rather than our own.

I found that my pets (started with 2 rabbits, added a 3rd and then ‘inherited’ my sister’s cat) helped me realize that my friends and family were there to support me and also needed my support.  More than once were thoughts of suicide pushed aside when I feared what would happen to my ‘fuzzy’ children.  Finding someone for Elmira the Psycho Kitty would not be hard but finding someone who knew how to ‘properly’ care for a rabbit would be difficult.  They help you realize that you affect the lives of the others and you have to make the best of it. I personally feel great when Elmira the Psycho Kitty comes to visit when I am getting ready for bed and sleeps either at the foot of the bed or at chest level.  Nothing like soothing purrs to calm your nerves and put you to sleep. > Of course dogs are far better than cats.

*Bzzzzz!*  Rabbits beat both hands down.  Make few vocal noises, eat grass and otherwise cheap to feed.  Still great to pet and cuddle with (harder than with a cat or dog) but still pretty darn nice. I am glad that I have pets.  Now that I know why I have felt two different people over the years, I can try to get my life back on track with the help of my mdoc and others.  But I probably would not have made it this far without my fuzzy balls of fur. i’m a long believer that animals of every sort can help with depression. Lord knows that my cat (we have 4 in the house) has comforted me in my bed when  i could not get up, just purring in contentment as i petted him.  To me that was unconditional love, and the actual act of contact with *anything* was better than no contact at all another very curious pet entered our lives recently, Furbies as graduation pets for our children.  what a curious, totally interactive toy that delights in every touch and responds to you at almost any touch.  they have been so good for me that i’m contemplating going and buying one just for myself :) – liz

"Cure" may be a little strong, but they certainly can help.  I find that having a dog forces me to think about something other than myself.  Plus, she is forever making me laugh.  Best of all, she snuggles with me every night.  I think I’d be terribly lonely without her.
